Tips to choose coffee beans

Coffee is a culture for many of us. It unites us, divides us and helps us connect to people in an instant way. When people need something to talk about after the topics of sports and entertainment have been exhausted, coffee is always a great option.

So, make sure you know what you’re talking about.  It’ll come in handy when it comes to conversation, but it’s also important to making sure you always have a great cup of coffee to look forward to in the morning.  When you’re looking at choosing coffee beans, here are some things to look for:

  • Brand
  • Flavour
  • Freshness
  • Location of origin

By keeping all of these topics in mind, you’ll be able to get the perfect kind of coffee beans for you and your personal taste.  Here’s everything you need to do to make the right choice.

Narrow down the flavour you like

Everyone has certain flavours that they like and hate.  This does not refer to just the idea of flavoured coffee versus plain coffee, but the fact that different roasts and blends have varying tastes.  There is:

  • Light roast
  • Medium roast
  • Dark roast

This is just the barest kind of choosing, but it will help you decide which kind of coffee to choose from.  Those who love light roast coffee don’t tend to enjoy the dark roast.  Most people tend to enjoy the medium roast, it’s a great combination for flavour and fullness.

Experiment within the roast

Once you’ve found the perfect roast for you, check out different blends within it.  To do that you can look at different coffee shops, both locally owned and chains and don’t be afraid to get your friends and family to help you experiment, too.  Some great locations with varying flavours are:

  • Starbucks
  • Fair Trade stores
  • Organic shops
  • Whole Food stores

Just to name a few.  These will allow you to get a wide variety in tastes and blends so you can make a list of what you do and don’t like.

Buy fresh and direct

When you’ve chosen the perfect blend for you, make sure you buy the coffee direct from the franchise/merchandiser and don’t rely on the grocery stores.  This means that you’ll often get a discount rate and you’ll be able to ensure that the coffee beans are fresh and rich.

A lot of times supermarkets and coffee shops get what’s left of the general brand, and it can be old or otherwise tampered with.  You’ll want the good stuff.

Coffee is something that means something different to each of us.  There are the scattered few that don’t drink it, but most do.  For those who love coffee, talking about it is just as good as drinking it.

And, when you meet that person who just can’t get enough, rely on them to show you the best hidden spots to get your next hit.  These tips should help you get the best taste you could ask for, and it’s all personalized for you and your tastebuds.  Are you ready for it?
